Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a child when her father, who worked as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth grew in a poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She went to school in Boston. She left the institution she was in within two years of her education in order to pursue acting as a profession. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles: In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. While in New York, she volunteered at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. It was there that she earned a living in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. She took classes in drama in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
